Modern vehicles use dashboard warning lights to alert you when something needs attention. Some lights are simply reminders, while others can indicate a fault that should be checked as soon as possible. Knowing what your car’s warning lights mean can help you respond quickly, avoid unnecessary damage and keep your vehicle safer on the road. If a warning light comes on and you are unsure what it means, the experienced team at Derek Steen's Auto Care can inspect the vehicle and diagnose the issue. Red Warning Lights: Stop Safely and Investigate Red warning lights generally indicate a serious issue or safety concern. If one appears while driving, pull over safely when practical and avoid continuing to drive until you understand the problem. Engine Oil Pressure Warning Light This light usually looks like an oil can. It may mean the engine has low oil pressure, which can cause severe engine damage if ignored. Stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe, turn off the engine and check the oil level once the engine has cooled. If the oil level is correct or the light remains on after topping up, arrange professional assistance before driving any further. Engine Temperature Warning Light Often shown as a thermometer over waves, this warning light means the engine may be overheating. Low coolant, a leak, radiator issue, thermostat fault or cooling-system problem could be responsible. Pull over safely, turn off the engine and allow it to cool completely. Never remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Book a cooling-system inspection with Derek Steen's Auto Care before further driving. Battery Charge Warning Light The battery-shaped light does not always mean the battery itself is faulty. It can indicate an issue with the alternator, drive belt, wiring or charging system. Your vehicle may continue running briefly, but it could stop once the battery loses charge. Have the electrical system tested promptly. Brake System Warning Light A red brake warning light may indicate that the handbrake is engaged, brake fluid is low or there is a fault in the braking system. Check that the handbrake is fully released. If the light stays on, or the brake pedal feels unusual, do not delay having the vehicle inspected. Amber or Yellow Warning Lights: Book a Check Soon Amber warning lights often mean the vehicle is still safe to drive cautiously, but a fault, maintenance requirement or system issue needs attention. Check Engine Light The check engine light can appear for many reasons, from a loose fuel cap to an engine-management, ignition, fuel-system or emissions issue. ABS Warning Light The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) warning light indicates that the ABS may not be working correctly. Your normal brakes may still operate, but the wheels could be more likely to lock during heavy braking. Have the system checked, especially before wet-weather, highway or long-distance driving. Tyre Pressure Monitoring Warning Light This warning light usually looks like a tyre with an exclamation mark inside. It can mean one or more tyres are underinflated, have a puncture or that there is an issue with the tyre-pressure monitoring system. Check tyre pressures against the manufacturer’s recommended settings and inspect the tyres for visible damage. Low tyre pressure can affect handling, braking, fuel economy and tyre wear. Traction Control Warning Light If this light flashes, it may simply mean the traction-control system is actively helping maintain grip on a slippery surface. If it stays on continuously, the system may have been switched off or may need diagnosis. Diesel Particulate Filter Warning Light For diesel vehicles, the DPF warning light may mean the filter is becoming blocked with soot. In some cases, a suitable longer drive at highway speeds may allow the vehicle to complete a regeneration cycle. However, if the light remains on, or other warning lights appear, it is best to arrange a professional inspection. Common Reminder Lights Not every warning light means a fault. Some are reminders that still deserve attention. Low fuel light: Refill soon to avoid running the tank too low. Service reminder light: Your vehicle may be due for scheduled servicing or a logbook service. Washer-fluid light: Top up the windscreen washer reservoir. Door-open light: Check that all doors, the bonnet and boot are properly closed. Seatbelt light: Ensure all occupants are safely buckled up. Why You Should Not Ignore Dashboard Warning Lights Ignoring a warning light can turn a minor issue into a more expensive repair. Early diagnosis can help prevent breakdowns, protect important components and keep your vehicle safe and reliable. At Derek Steen's Auto Care, we can carry out professional vehicle diagnostics to identify the cause of warning lights and recommend the right repairs. Whether it is a check engine light, brake warning, overheating issue, battery concern or tyre-pressure alert, our team can help get you back on the road with confidence. If a warning light has appeared on your dashboard, contact Derek Steen's Auto Care or book your vehicle in online for an inspection.

New Car Service in Castlemaine

Engines that operate through internal combustion rely on large amounts of clean air to ensure the fuel burns properly and generates the power needed to drive the vehicle. At Derek Steen's Auto Care in Castlemaine, we understand how vital it is to keep your car's air filter in good condition as part of protecting your engine's health. Your engine requires extremely clean air to function efficiently. Dirt, dust, and other particles entering the engine can cause serious damage. That’s where the air filter comes into play. It ensures the air entering the combustion chambers is clean, shielding key engine components such as the pistons and cylinders from wear and damage. Why Replace Your Air Filter? Save on Fuel Costs: Your engine requires the correct balance of fuel and air to run efficiently. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing your engine to run inefficiently – often referred to as ‘running rich.’ This not only puts additional stress on your engine but can also increase fuel consumption by up to 10%. No one likes spending more on petrol than necessary! Protect Your Engine: Over time, air filters become clogged and weaker, increasing the risk of damage. A damaged or overly dirty air filter can allow harmful particles to enter the engine, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Benefits of Replacing Your Air Filter: Extends the life of your engine Improves fuel efficiency Reduces vehicle emissions At Derek Steen's Auto Care, we always check the condition of your air filter during every full car service. Whether it’s a major or minor service, or one that follows your manufacturer’s handbook or logbook guidelines, you can trust us to keep your engine running smoothly.

Keep your engine healthy with clean air filters. Improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and extend engine life. Visit Derek Steen's Auto Care for expert maintenance and reliable car servicing.
